If Indeed One Has the Languages

In one’s own field of expertise, the writing of every sentence prompts, “Do I in fact know that? How do I know?” Beyond that field, there is the question of when to rely on the judgment of a fellow scholar, and when to return to that scholar’s sources, if indeed one has the languages and the expertise to do so.
